When to Take Engagement Photos Before Your Wedding

Aside from the actual 'I do's' that you exchange with your partner on the wedding day, the most important aspect of the entire process is the proposal! Nothing gets in motion until the nerve-wrecking task of getting down on one knee and asking your partner to spend the rest of their life with you has taken place.

Now, once your better-half has (hopefully) said yes, you are ready to share your news to the world, which in this day and age means posting to as many social media sites as you can psychically and mentally keep up with. Or perhaps, you just want some professional photos to remember the moment privately. Either way, we've captured many couples engagement photos over the years, and offer engagement photos as part of our higher-tier photo package!

Not only are engagement photos perfect for save the dates, wedding websites, and social media announcements, they also give you a chance to get comfortable in front of the camera before your wedding day. Many couples tell us their engagement session helped them feel far more relaxed and confident when the big day finally arrived. It's also a great way to meet you before the day, see how we work and get to know each other better before the wedding day.

One of the biggest questions we get asked is: When should you take your engagement photos?  There’s no single perfect answer, it really depends on your wedding timeline and how you plan to use the photos.

For most couples, we recommend scheduling engagement photos around 6–12 months before the wedding. This gives you plenty of time to use the images for save the dates, invitations, wedding websites, or even have the photos printed and used as decoration at your wedding reception. It also helps avoid the stress of trying to fit a session into the final hectic months before the wedding.

It's important to know what look you want from your engagement photos. Location plays a huge role in this. If you're wanting your photos to feel cinematic and romantic then choose somewhere with lots of nature and views, opting for golden hour. If you want your photos to feel lively and textured then choose a city backdrop. Choose a vibe that not only reflects your personality as a couple, but also something that will suit your wedding aesthetic.

Ultimately, there’s never a wrong time to celebrate your engagement. Whether you book your session immediately after the proposal or wait until closer to the wedding, the most important thing is capturing this exciting chapter in a way that feels true to you both.

If you’re currently planning your wedding and wondering when to book your engagement photos, we’d love to help guide you through the process and create images that you’ll treasure long after the wedding day is over.
